HUMANKIND, LIGHTING UP THE FUTURE
Humankind is an Ahmedabad-based voluntary organisation dedicated to championing Child Rights, with a specific focus on the Right to Development. Our core mission revolves around providing crucial support to underprivileged children, ensuring their regular attendance at school, and offering additional assistance beyond regular school hours. We also educate children on important issues related to health, hygiene, the environment, and sanitation.
In addition to our core commitment to school-based support, Humankind extends guidance for higher studies and vocational training to youth who have completed their schooling, as well as to adults within the community. Through our Saksham project, we provide vocational training, initially concentrating on tailoring and beauty parlour skills at our centre in Ramnagar, Sabarmati. Keeping pace with changing times, students also receive training in basic computer skills and internet safety.
The Project Poshan is specifically dedicated to providing support in terms of nutrition and hygiene education to adolescent girls, pregnant women, and senior citizens. Furthermore, under our Anjali project, we offer financial assistance for education to underprivileged single-parent and orphaned children.
We also prioritize the dissemination of awareness among students and their parents regarding critical issues such as child abuse, safety, sexual harassment in the workplace, and financial literacy. At Humankind, our commitment lies in fostering a supportive and well-informed community for the holistic development of all individuals, thereby creating an inclusive society.
HOW THE JOURNEY STARTED
In 2009, Humankind commenced its modest journey with just five students from a municipal school in Sabarmati, Ahmedabad. Initially, these children took part in both indoor and outdoor games and sports on Sundays within the school premises. As years passed, we took a leap of faith as an organization. The students received education on the importance of personal hygiene, covering aspects like regular bathing, clothes washing, nail trimming, and maintaining tidy hair. With an increasing number of children, the encouragement to study under the guidance of Humankind volunteers was introduced, with participation in games and sports serving as an incentive.
After operating within the school premises for four years, Humankind’s dedication caught the attention of a real estate developer in 2013. Generously, he provided the current premises at Nanakram Super Market, Ramnagar, Sabarmati, for Humankind to conduct its activities. Through donations from concerned citizens, businesses, and corporate entities, Humankind has successfully furnished the premises with essential resources, including books, school bags, kits, teaching and learning aids, computers, audiovisual equipment, furniture, and sewing machines.
Currently, approximately 150 students are enrolled with Humankind. They actively participate in sessions from Monday to Friday between 4 pm and 7 pm, adjusting to their respective school schedules. Furthermore, they engage in recreational activities on Sundays from 9 am to 12 noon.
